In short: Slingshot is free and open source under the AGPL v3. You own your data. Do not store secrets in the Application. Feedback you submit grants us a license to use it for improving Slingshot. Slingshot is provided "as is" — we are not liable for any damages.
Acceptance of terms
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Slingshot desktop application ("the Application"), the Slingshot website at sling-shot.pages.dev ("the Website"), and any related services (collectively, "Slingshot"). By accessing or using Slingshot, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use Slingshot.
These Terms are in addition to, not a replacement for, the license under which the Application is distributed. In the event of a conflict between these Terms and the license, the license controls for the software itself.
Definitions
- "Feedback" — any content submitted through the Website's feedback form.
- "Launch Actions" — user-configured commands, URLs, application paths, and folder shortcuts that the Application executes on your behalf.
- "Content" — any data, configurations, project information, or text you enter into the Application.
Software license
Slingshot is free, open source software licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3 (AGPL v3). The full license text is the authoritative source — this section is a summary only.
- Use, modify, run — You may use, copy, modify, and run the Application for any purpose, including commercial use.
- Distribute — You may share the original or modified source code with others, provided you license it under the AGPL v3 and include the original copyright notice.
- Network interaction clause — If you modify the Application and make it available as a network service, you must provide the complete corresponding source code of your modifications to all users interacting with it remotely. See our License page for full details.
If you contribute code to Slingshot via pull request, your contribution is made under the same license. See our CONTRIBUTING.md for details.
The Desktop Application
Slingshot is provided free of charge and "as is." The Application runs entirely on your local machine and does not communicate with any external server operated by us. You retain full ownership of all Content you enter into the Application — we claim no ownership over your project configurations, Launch Actions, folder paths, or any other data stored locally.
Warning: Do not store passwords, API tokens, access keys, secrets, or other credentials in the Application. The Application is not designed as a secrets manager and does not encrypt its database beyond what your operating system provides for files at rest.
You are responsible for ensuring the Application is compatible with your operating system and hardware, and that Launch Actions you configure do not execute malicious, harmful, or unauthorized commands.
The Website
The Website is provided for informational purposes, project documentation, download links, and community feedback. It is provided "as is" without warranties of availability, accuracy, or fitness for a particular purpose. We make reasonable efforts to keep the Website accurate and available but do not guarantee uninterrupted access or error-free content.
Feedback form
When you submit feedback through the Website, you agree that:
- Your submission is honest, accurate, and provided in good faith.
- You will not submit spam, malware, phishing content, viruses, or fraudulent material.
- You will not submit content that violates third-party rights, including intellectual property rights, privacy rights, or publicity rights.
- You will not submit content that is unlawful, defamatory, harassing, threatening, or obscene.
- You will not attempt to exploit, attack, overload, or circumvent the form, its bot protection (Cloudflare Turnstile), or its underlying infrastructure.
- You will not use automated tools (bots, scripts, scrapers) to submit feedback.
We reserve the right to reject, remove, or ignore any feedback that violates these terms without notice or liability.
Feedback content license
You retain ownership of anything you write in the feedback form. By submitting feedback, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable license to use, reference, quote, reproduce, modify, and display your feedback for the sole purpose of improving, documenting, and promoting Slingshot. We will attribute your feedback if we share it publicly (e.g., in release notes, documentation, or marketing materials), unless you request otherwise.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use Slingshot for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable law or regulation.
- Use the Application to execute commands that could damage your system, compromise security, or harm third parties.
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Website, its infrastructure, or any connected systems.
- Use automated tools (bots, scrapers, crawlers) to interact with the Website, except for standard search engine indexing.
- Misrepresent your identity, affiliation, or ownership when submitting feedback or using the Website.
- Interfere with or disrupt the Website's infrastructure, including submitting resource-exhaustion attacks (e.g., denial of service).
- Remove, alter, or obscure any copyright notices, license files, or attribution within the Application or its source code.
- Use the Application or Website to transmit malware, spyware, adware, or any other malicious software.
Third-party services and links
Slingshot may interact with or link to third-party services:
- Desktop Application — The Application may launch third-party applications (e.g., Visual Studio Code) and open URLs in your default browser as part of your configured Launch Actions. These interactions are initiated entirely by you. We are not responsible for the behavior, content, privacy practices, or terms of any third-party application or website.
- Website — The Website links to external resources such as GitHub repositories and third-party documentation. We are not responsible for the content, accuracy, privacy practices, or availability of external sites.
Your use of third-party services is governed by their respective terms and privacy policies. We encourage you to review those terms.
Intellectual property and DMCA
Slingshot and its name, logo, and branding are our intellectual property and are not covered by the open source license applied to the software.
If you believe that content on the Website or in the feedback system infringes your copyright, you may submit a notification under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Please include:
- A physical or electronic signature of the copyright owner or authorized agent.
- Identification of the copyrighted work claimed to be infringed.
- Identification of the material claimed to be infringing, with sufficient detail for us to locate it.
- Your contact information (name, address, phone, email).
- A statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorized.
- A statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in the notification is accurate and you are authorized to act on behalf of the copyright owner.
Send DMCA notices through our feedback form. We will investigate and remove infringing material where appropriate.
Export controls
Slingshot is subject to export laws and regulations, including the U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and trade sanctions. You are responsible for complying with all applicable export control laws in your jurisdiction. You may not download, export, or re-export Slingshot to any country subject to comprehensive U.S. sanctions, or to any person or entity on the U.S. Treasury Department's Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list or the U.S. Commerce Department's Denied Persons List.
Disclaimer of warranties
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Slingshot is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including but not limited to:
- Implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
- Warranties that the Application will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or free of viruses or other harmful components.
- Warranties regarding the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of the Application or Website content.
- Warranties that the Application will be compatible with your specific hardware, operating system, or software configuration.
These disclaimers supplement the warranty disclaimers in the LICENSE file, which contains the full text of the AGPL v3 (Sections 15–16). In the event of a conflict, the LICENSE file controls for the software itself.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall the developers, contributors, maintainers, copyright holders, or any party involved in creating, producing, or delivering Slingshot be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, punitive, or exemplary damages, including but not limited to:
- Loss of data, profits, revenue, business, or anticipated savings.
- Loss of goodwill or reputation.
- Cost of procurement of substitute goods or services.
- Computer failure, malfunction, or system damage.
- Any damages arising from loss of access to your files, projects, or configurations.
This limitation applies regardless of the theory of liability (contract, tort, strict liability, or otherwise) and even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages. Our total aggregate liability shall not exceed the amount you paid for Slingshot, which is zero ($0).
Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the Slingshot developers, contributors, and maintainers from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, or expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from:
- Your use of Slingshot.
- Your violation of these Terms.
- Your violation of any third-party rights.
- Any Content you submit through the feedback form.
- Any Launch Actions or commands you configure and execute through the Application.
User responsibilities
You are solely responsible for:
- Ensuring you have the right to configure and execute the commands, URLs, and applications you add to Slingshot.
- Complying with all applicable laws and regulations in your jurisdiction, including export controls (see Export controls above).
Availability and support
Slingshot is open source software provided without service-level agreements, guaranteed support, or commitments to maintain or update the Application. We may, at our discretion, provide updates, bug fixes, or new features, but we are under no obligation to do so.
Community support is available through our feedback page or by emailing slingshot.dev@proton.me. We do not guarantee response times or resolution of any reported issue.
Modifications to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be announced by updating the "Last updated" date, and posting in our GitHub repository. Continued use after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated Terms.
If Slingshot is discontinued
If the Slingshot project is archived, abandoned, or otherwise discontinued:
- These Terms remain in effect for one year after discontinuation, after which they expire.
- The AGPL v3 license remains in effect permanently for any version of the software you have already received — discontinuation does not revoke your license.
- Your data remains on your device. Since the Application makes no network requests, there is nothing for us to retain or transfer. See our Privacy Policy for details on data handling at discontinuation.
Termination
These Terms remain in effect while you use Slingshot. You may terminate your use of Slingshot at any time by uninstalling the Application and ceasing use of the Website.
We may restrict or terminate your access to the Website if we reasonably believe you have violated these Terms. Upon termination, your right to use Slingshot ceases. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (including disclaimers, limitations of liability, indemnification, and governing law) will survive.
Governing law and dispute resolution
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any disputes arising from or relating to these Terms or your use of Slingshot shall be resolved through good-faith negotiation first. If negotiation fails, disputes shall be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Delaware.
If you are a consumer in the European Union, you may also benefit from mandatory consumer protection provisions of the law of your country of residence.
Severability
If any provision of these Terms is held to be unenforceable or invalid, the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect. The unenforceable provision will be modified to the minimum extent necessary to make it enforceable.
Waiver
Our failure to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. Any waiver of any provision of these Terms will be effective only if in writing and signed by us.
